I am a huge fan of media history. Through my various educational pursuits, I found a way to incorporate media and media history. For example, my master’s degree thesis was an in-depth examination of radio drama from an Alberta perspective during the golden age of radio. My Doctoral degree was in Educational Leadership but was completed with a media studies focus.

My first book was a history of media. I discovered, however, that there was not a massive market for the topic, and as a result, no publishers wanted to take a chance on the book.

Not to be daunted, I felt the material was worthy of release. I decided that a personal blog would allow me to continue researching the subject matter and release it as the various sections are ready.

The blog will begin with early advertising and branding practices from around 5000 years ago. The blog topics cover mass media, including the printing press, telegraph, illustrations and photography, recordings, film and cinema, radio, television, digital, mobile, and immersive. This blog examines the cultural history from the emergence and developments of the nineteenth century up to current trends in immersive media.

You will be introduced to various topics that will lay a foundational understanding of media and allow for further examination as you progress through the posts. The blog will also include, where possible, a decidedly Canadian perspective on media and media studies. Particularly in the early history of media, local examples will be included. Regional, national, and international models are presented where local examples do not exist.

I look forward to having you along for the ride. Please respond and add to the various categories as you see fit.
