Stories for Younger Readers
For years, when I taught postsecondary radio, my announcing students were required to buy a “textbook” for voice work. They never expected it to be Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss. I still think it’s one of the best books ever written for vocal warm-ups.
I call this section “Stories for Younger Readers” for a reason. During my BFA in drama, my instructor Joyce Doolittle, a leader in theatre for young audiences, insisted we never treat young people as a lesser audience. The phrase mattered because the respect behind it mattered.
I’ve been circling the idea of writing for younger readers since 2024, when my wife Libby and I began a multi-year, full-time RV adventure with our faithful companion, Morrie. He turns up in a lot of my work, partly because he inspires it, and partly because he’s the best sounding board I’ve ever had. As long as there’s something to sniff, he’s happy to listen.
Below you’ll find the stories, and story seeds, that have been keeping me company on the road.

When Mom and Dad consider adopting a rescue puppy named Morrie, Dad imagines perfect walks and cuddles while Mom pictures chaos, giant paws, and even bigger messes. But when they finally meet Morrie, the shy little pup surprises everyone, and they discover that sometimes the right family just knows.
